The founder of Popular Mission Retreats

St. Vincent de Paul, who is commonly known as the father of the poor, and the heavenly patron of the Vincentian Congregation, is the founder of the Popular Mission Retreats. Moved by the deplorable spiritual degradation of the faithful working in the estates of the Feudal Lords, and the villagers in France the Saint started programmes of spiritual renewal of which Popular Mission happened to be the most important and effective one. The main goal and thrust was three-faceted renewal- individual renewal, family renewal, and parish renewal. To meet this end in view he started the Congregation of the Mission, a religious congregation exclusively to preach Popular Missions.

Popular Mission and the Vincentian Congregation

The Vincentian Congregation the second indigenous congregation in Kerala which was started in 1904 took up as its main charism “the preaching of Popular Mission Retreats”. The first Popular Mission in its full structure was conducted in 1952 at St. George Forane Church Angamaly.

Distinctive features of Popular Mission
  1. The retreat is preached not in the parish church alone. The parish will be divided to small units and in each unit the same programme will be conducted simultaneously.
  2. The preaching and other common services will be during early morning and evening hours. So it does not hinder the people to go for work and the students to go to school.
  3. It is called Popular Mission because it for the people and by the people. The participation of the people is not limited to listening, but they are active, and play vital roles, from the stage of preparation to the conclusion.
  4. No fee is charged for conducting the Popular Mission. The expense of the team members is met by the Congregation.
  5. People come to the retreat centres in procession shouting specific slogans, and lead by the appointed leader who holds the Papal flag.
  6. The teachings will be based on the scriptures and the teaching of the church.
  7. Renewal of Baptismal vows and Marriage vows, insistence on the sacrament of reconciliation, and solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist help the revitalization of the sacramental and family life of the faithful.
  8. The retreat is concluded with a penitential procession. The participants holding an wooden cross process from the respective centres and come to the parish church for the concluding session comprising of singing hymns,a short preaching, and adoration.

So far Popular Mission has proved to be the most effective form of parish retreat to renew the spiritual and sacramental life of the members.
